BOS Approves Changes In

Retail Licensing & Taxation

The Board of Supervisors at its January 25 meeting unanimously adopted changes in retail licensing and taxation that were recommended by the Commissioner of the Revenue.

The changes, according to COR Sharon Carter, will make Caroline County more competitive in attracting a wider base of activities by collectively licensing organized events rather than licensing individual businesses. She believes this approach will be easier for organized events and more revenue friendly for the County.

Speaking at the public hearing was Curry Roberts, President of the Virginia State Fair. Roberts spoke in favor of the ordinance and complimented Carter and staff and their work in preparing the ordinance.

Other matters before the Board of Supervisors included:

  • Discussed possible projects that may be included in the 2011 spring borrowing.
  • Approved medical and dental insurance coverage renewal for County employees.
  • Discussed environmental and regulatory proposals by the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Conservation and Recreation.
  • Denied a rezoning request for deferral by applicant Juan Young and moved the matter to the February 10 BOS meeting.
  • Authorized the Fire and Rescue Department to apply for 2011 Virginia Office of Medical Services Rescue Squad Assistance Grant and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative 2011 LEARN grant.
  • Continued its meeting to 6 p.m. February 2 for possible joint meeting with the Caroline School Board and to discuss the supervisor vacancy in the Reedy Church District.
