Fort A.P. Hill to host Volksmarch

FORT A.P. HILL, Va. – Nature and fitness enthusiasts or even those interested parties seeking an opportunity to get out and enjoy the outdoors in a social setting are invited to Fort A.P. Hill’s “Year of the Family” Volksmarch, Nov. 20.

The five (3.1 mile) and 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) walks will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Community Activities Center located across the street from the post headquarters.

Participants can choose to walk either the 5K or 10K courses through the installation’s varied trails where they can pause to observe some of the abundant wildlife and see how Fort A.P. Hill’s environmental staff preserves and protects various plant and animal habitats.

Volksmarch — literally “the people’s walk” — traces its roots to the mid-1960s in Germany, where it became a popular, stress-free way for people of all ages to exercise in a non-competitive, fun environment.

Upon completion of the Volksmarch, commemorative pins will be presented to each participant.

Fort A.P. Hill Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will have their food truck on location to provide food and beverages for purchase.

Community members wishing to participate in the volksmarch will need a valid driver’s license, car registration and proof of car insurance to gain access to the installation. Individuals are advised not to attempt to bring any prohibited items, i.e. guns, knives and drug paraphernalia as vehicles entering the installation are subject to inspection.
