Fifth murder suspect in Penola Road case arrested
Joseph Thomas Smith, the fifth and final suspect in the 2007 murders of Willie D. Smith and Jamal Nasir was arrested by the U.S. Marshall’s office on Jan. 20 and turned over to Caroline authorities. The bodies of those two men were found inthe trunk of a car on Penola Road in Caroline County.
Thomas, who is the husband of India Perleta Smith, the lone female suspect involved, had been on the run since December.

On May 24, 2007, Deputies of this office discovered the bodies of 2 homicide victims in a vehicle in Ruther Glen. After a lengthy investigation involving investigators from Caroline, Henrico and the City of Richmond, indictments were obtained. Charged are Levon J. Smith, 23; Sheppard C. Thomas, III, 29; Kevin L. Coleman, 30; India P. Smith, 24 and Joseph Thomas Smith, 29. All are from the Richmond area. All except Joseph Smith were arrested in December. On January 20, 210, Joseph Smith was arrested by the U. S. Marshall’s office and turned over to Caroline Investigators. Each defendant is charged with 2 counts of first degree murder, 2 counts of abduction and 2 counts of robbery. All are being held without bond. As these crimes involve multiple jurisdictions, federal prosecutions are being contemplated.
