Fire and rescue Director resigns

Caroline County Director of Fire and Rescue Ed Fuzy has resigned from his position effective today at 5 p.m.

Fuzy was hired as Director in 2002. He is the third person to hold the position since it was created by the Board of Supervisors in the 1990′s.

"I want to thank Ed for his years of service with Caroline County," said County Administrator Percy Ashcraft. "I wish him well during this time of transition in his career."

Ashcraft said this will be an opportunity to establish clear direction and policy in the Fire and Rescue area. He will confer with the Board of Supervisors in the coming weeks to get their input on whether to continue with the position of Director or establish a new position of Fire Chief.

That position was recommended by a recent study on how the Fire and Rescue operations could be improved in Caroline County. Ashcraft also included the recommendation in his FY 2010 Budget presentation last week.

"We will move quickly to establish stability within the Fire and Rescue operations," Ashcraft said. "The heart of our system is the volunteer companies. We need to get better at tying together the career and volunteer efforts. Our citizens deserve the best coverage we can give them and that begins with coordination and cooperation with everyone involved in the system."

Deputy Director Mark Garnett will lead the Fire and Rescue Department in the interim. Ashcraft hopes to have the top position filled no later than July 1.
