MWH named a top Virginia hospital

U.S. News & World Report ranked Fredericksburg’s Mary Washington Hospital the sixth best Virginia hospital in its annual ”Best Hospitals” report for 2014-2015.

MWH moved up two spots from last year’s survey.

The hospital was also named the fifth-best in the D.C. metro area, up from seventh last year, and was recognized for eight high performing specialties, up from six a year ago: diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology, and urology.

MWH was among only 21 in the state recognized for meeting standards for strong performance.

The ranking, released Tuesday, lists the best hospitals in each state according to information provided by the American Hospital Association, which compiles data on all U.S. hospitals through an annual survey and from other sources. It is intended to help patients identify hospitals exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult cases.

The report had this to say about MWH:

“Mary Washington Hospital…performed nearly at the level of nationally ranked U.S. News Best Hospitals in 8 adult specialties… It scored high in patient safety, demonstrating commitment to reducing accidents and medical mistakes.”

MWH had 23,294 admissions in the latest year for which data are available. It performed 8,236 annual inpatient and 14,511 outpatient surgeries during that time period and its emergency room had 89,151 visits.

Virginia has nearly 130 hospitals. Three are nationally ranked and 21 others, including MWH, meet standards for strong performance within the state. U.S. News also ranked hospitals in the Richmond and Virginia Beach metro areas.

The top five spots went to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Winchester Medical Center respectively.

MWH topped University of Virginia Medical Center for the sixth slot.
