Local dishes resonate with voters, customers

The two local restaurant dishes that are in the quarterfinals of the statewide “Virginia is for Lovers Culinary Madness” contest are equally popular with customers.

The Bavarian Chef’s braised pork shank dish Schweinshaxe and Foode’s Fredericksburger are both now in the “Enticing Eight.” The current round of voting runs through Friday.

The two local dishes would meet head to head in the semifinals if both advance.

Beth Black, co-owner of Foode, and Christine Thalwitz, co-owner of The Bavarian Chef, said both of the dishes routinely sell out — which was true before the contest also.

Black said Foode always has 50 Fredericksburgers available for lunch, and always sells out. Thalwitz said the Schweinshaxe is one of the restaurant’s most-popular specials and sells out quickly — as it did this past weekend. Supplies will be replenished so everyone can try it.
