Cannon Ridge likely to remain closed through 2014

Cannon Ridge Golf Club in Stafford County will probably remain closed for the entire 2014 season as the owners revamp the course and look for an operator.

The course off U.S. 17 in Celebrate Virginia North has been closed since the end of 2012, when previous operator Washington National Golf declined to renew its lease.

Since then an affiliate of the Silver Cos., which owns the course, has been working on making it more financially viable as it speaks with potential operators that have expressed interest. Cannon Ridge opened in 2003 and was considered one of the best courses in the Fredericksburg region.

Since the course closed, the fairways and tees have been converted from bentgrass to Latitude 36 bermudagrass, which Silver officials believe is better suited for the Fredericksburg region’s climate. Bunkers have also been improved.

Bobby Weed, who worked on the course’s original design, has been overseeing the renovation and maintenance of the course. Silver and Weed officials say the course could be ready for play within two or three months, but that it probably won’t reopen until 2015.
