Business Notes, 3/27/14

Here is some news from Fredericksburg-area businesses over the past week:

  • Wegmans Food Markets, which has a store in Fredericksburg, has been ranked the best supermarket in the U.S. by participants in a Consumer Reports survey that rated stores based on service, quality of perishables, prices and cleanliness. Wegmans was followed by Trader Joe’s, Publix, Costco and Sprouts Farmers Market.
  • Dr. Wm. Mitchell Powell is retiring this week following a four-decade career as an area optometrist. Going forward, Dr. Angela Tsai will lead the practice at 230 Butler Road in Stafford County.
  • A-T Solutions Inc., a counter-terrorism company with a large local presence, was recently awarded a $37 million contract by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division in support of the Naval Expeditionary Forensics and Biometrics program to assist in providing forensic support to all branches of the military.
  • James Acors last week purchased Spotsylvania County-based Acors Topsoil and Mulch from his mother, Rebecca Acors, ensuring another generation of family ownership for the business at 6601 Macklin Drive.
  • Flair Communication recently designed a new website for local general contractor JON Properties. The site includes information on the company’s planned One Hanover project.
  • Lynn A. Knight has been appointed vice president of knowledge management and development of the Washington-based International Economic Development Council. Knight has worked with Stafford and Spotsylvania county officials on area tourism programs.
  • Plants Map, a social media website for gardeners and other plant enthusiasts, should be incorporated by the end of the week, said Bill Blevins, who is running the startup with his wife, Tracy. Plants Map won the most recent Startup Fredericksburg contest and is already working on several local park and garden projects.
