A. Smith Bowman names master distiller

Brian Prewitt

The A. Smith Bowman Distillery in Spotsylvania County has named a new master distiller.

Brian Prewitt, a Colorado native who has nearly 15 years of brewing and distilling experience, has taken over the job.

The distillery is in a 46,000-square-foot facility on Bowman Drive off State Route 2. Whiskey, including the company’s flagship Virginia Gentleman brand, is made there, and public tours are offered.

The company’s previous master distiller, Truman Cox, died unexpectedly in February at the age of 44. Cox replaced longtime Bowman master distiller Joe Dangler in late 2011.

Prewitt has an undergraduate degree in food science from Colorado State University and has completed the master brewers program at the University of California, Davis.

He worked at the New Belgium and Great Divide brewing companies before entering the distillery business with E&J Distillers in Modesto, Calif.

Prewitt, who is married with three children, called his new position with A. Smith Bowman a “dream job.”
