CEO of NSWC Federal Credit Union killed in accident

The longtime chief executive officer of King George County-based NSWC Federal Credit Union was killed in a Thursday morning car accident on his way to work.

Harry Clayton Ovitt Jr., a 63-year-old Spotsylvania County resident, was driving to work in the Dahlgren area on State Route 206 when the accident occurred about 6:15 a.m., said NSWC Vice Presidents Virginia Storage and Charlie Armstrong. They said he always got to work early.

Ovitt’s eastbound 1995 Lexus ES300 went off the right side of the road and hit a power pole and tree near Oak Wood Drive, according to state police. Ovitt, who was wearing his seatbelt, was taken by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital, where he died. Ovitt was alone, and no other vehicles were involved.

Ovitt had been CEO at NSWC for 27 years, the two vice presidents said. They said he was well-respected and well-liked by NSWC’s roughly 100 employees. He knew the credit union’s employees personally through frequent visits to all of NSWC’s area branches and personal lunches with his staffers.

“He wasn’t just the boss,” Armstrong said. “He was your friend.”

Armstrong said NSWC has a succession plan in place and is working on it with the Board of Directors. A new CEO has not yet been announced.

Ovitt had been married for 42 years and had three children, according to his obituary. He was a member of Calvary Chapel of Fredericksburg, coached youth sports, and enjoyed card games and sports.

Ovitt’s funeral will be held Monday morning. The family asked that memorial donations be made to Calvary Chapel of Fredericksburg, Old Dominion Humane Society or Fredericksburg Christian Schools.
