Trees cleared for Stafford airport landings

Numerous trees have been taken down recently on land off U.S. 1 near Perchwood Drive in Stafford County to remove obstructions that could hinder pilots’ approaches into the Stafford Regional Airport.

The Stafford Regional Airport Authority acquired about 14.8 acres with Federal Aviation Administration funds in order to clear the land of trees. Grass is being planted where the trees were cut down to prevent obstruction growth in the future.

Airport officials have proposed exchanging the 14.8 acres with the Stafford Economic Development Authority for 104 acres the EDA owns at the end of the runway. The airport wants to eventually extend its runway 1,000 feet.

Stafford EDA members have asked for an appraisal on both properties before deciding on the land swap, and the EDA recently started a conceptual design study to determine the future development potential of the site off U.S. 1. The matter is expected to be discussed at the EDA’s meeting Friday.
