The city of Fredericksburg will be one of two Virginia communities that the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Richmond District Office will honor as “Small Business Communities of the Year” at a June 24 luncheon in Richmond.

The other is the town of Marion, which is off Interstate 81 in the western part of the state. The SBA’s Richmond office covers all of Virginia except for the inner Washington suburbs of Northern Virginia.

Jason Cohen, president of Fredericksburg-based ILM Corp., will be honored at the same June 24 luncheon at The Westin Richmond hotel as Virginia’s Small Business Person of the Year.

The SBA district office picked Fredericksburg for its community award for an environment that is friendly to startups and expanding small businesses, according to a news release. Evaluation metrics include use of incentives and economic development resources to benefit local small businesses.

Jayne Armstrong, director of the SBA’s Richmond District Office, in the news release called Fredericksburg and Marion “economic development role models for communities across Virginia.”

The news release highlighted Fredericksburg’s facade improvement and various other incentive programs, inter-departmental cooperation and active promotion of its status as a HUBZone.
