A local muralist is opening a business in downtown Fredericksburg that will sell furniture and home decor painted in the owner’s whimsical style.

Janese Simunek will host a grand opening event starting at 5 p.m. Friday for her new venture at 1011 Caroline St.: When Pigs Fly.

When Pigs Fly will be located in the former home of Dog Krazy, which recently moved to 307 William St. The business will sell furniture and other home decor that Simunek purchases from flea markets, yard sales and other sources before painting them with images of animals and other designs. She’ll do custom orders as well.

Simunek and her husband, Melvin Brown, have been running Wall Creations by Janese for the past 12 years. They paint murals, faux finishes and other custom jobs at clients’ homes and businesses.

Simunek still does home murals, but she wants to start transitioning into work that doesn’t involve long days painting on scaffolding. She and her husband decided to lease the former Dog Krazy space to help market their mural business and sell furniture.

Simunek plans to keep the shop open until 7 p.m. weekdays and later on weekends. She will do a lot of painting on Caroline Street outside the store and may offer workshops.

The name of her business comes from Simunek’s love of pigs as well as her attitude that anything is possible.
