Fredericksburg among five to apply for Main Street program
Fredericksburg was one of five Virginia communities that applied for inclusion in the state’s Main Street program this year.
Ashland, Covington, Lexington and Wytheville also applied, said Amanda Pearson, public relations director for the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
Pearson said at least two of the communities will be designated as Main Street communities and possibly more. The application deadline recently passed, and she said the applications will be reviewed as soon as possible.
Twenty-five communities are part of the state’s Main Street program, which aims to create thriving central business districts. Among the participants are Culpeper, Orange, Warrenton and Manassas.
Fredericksburg hopes to be in the program and to hire a full-time executive director by June. The local Main Street organization would be a separate legal entity from the city with a focus on downtown.
