Keeling works to turn around Potomac Supply

Darrell Keeling, CEO of Potomac Supply, LLC of Kinsale. (Thursday, February 28, 2013. (ROBERT A. MARTIN / THE FREE LANCE-STAR)

A 25-year veteran of the building-supply business hopes to help turn around a Westmoreland County lumber mill with a proud history that has more recently fallen on hard times.

Darrell Keeling took over leadership of Kinsale-based Potomac Supply LLC when New York-based private equity firm American Industrial Partners purchased the business Dec. 19.

AIP recruited Potomac’s new president and chief executive officer from his previous job as a regional manager with Flakeboard Co. in South Carolina.

Keeling said he saw the job as an opportunity “to take a good company that had fallen on some hard times and rebuild it.”

Potomac Supply’s history dates back to 1948. It was long one of the largest employers in the Northern Neck, but a severe downturn in the market for new homes drastically reduced demand for the softwood products Potomac supplies to the building industry.

Potomac Supply filed for bankruptcy early last year. American Industrial Partners, which has several other investments in the building products industry, bought the firm for $10 million.
