Here are some odds and ends from the world of Fredericksburg-area business:

March 1 is the deadline for the most recent cycle of grant requests through the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Economic Development Authorities. Click here and here for details.

“Startup Weekend” is scheduled June 7-9 at Germanna Community College’s campus in Spotsylvania County. The weekend-long event strives to create and improve great ideas for startup companies.

Spotsylvania-based Edward Jones financial advisers Ben Maxwell and Bridgette Zanella recently received an award from the firm for being among its top client service providers in the country.

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative recently promoted Carolyn Schoonover to director of human resources. She has been with REC for 16 years serving in various human resources and accounting positions.

Spotsylvania County-based based Tactical Micro Inc. has been awarded a contract from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority for the design and testing of a closed-circuit television system on a limited quantity of WMATA rail cars and facilities to assess the feasibility of such a system.

Defense contractor United Global Group Inc., which recently opened an office in Fredericksburg’s Idlewild neighborhood, was recently certified in the federal government’s HUBZone program. Managing Director Larry Paige said the company decided to open in Fredericksburg because of the program.

Patricio Enterprises Inc. has signed an agreement with University of Maryland University College that will allow the company’s employees, spouses and dependents to complete degrees or pursue continuing education at UMUC. Patricio and UMUC are located in the same office building at the Quantico Corporate Center in North Stafford.
