Region has its best holiday season
Fredericksburg-area stores appear to have had a successful holiday shopping season in 2012.
Local taxable sales hit nearly $900 million in the fourth quarter, according to Virginia Department of Taxation data released Tuesday.
That was up 2 percent from the same period in 2011. It was the highest total for the last three months of the year since the Department of Taxation changed the way it tracks data in late 2005.
Stafford experienced the biggest gains in the region, with fourth-quarter taxable sales rising 4.3 percent year-over-year.
The quarter fell short of the region’s record results in the third quarter, when taxable sales hit $919 million.
The region comprises Fredericksburg and Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties. Taxable sales are a good indicator of economic activity and consumer spending, as they include figures from a wide variety of manufacturing, retail and service businesses.
