A. Smith Bowman master distiller dies

Truman Cox, who died Saturday.

The man who has been overseeing the transformation of Spotsylvania County’s A. Smith Bowman Distillery over the past year and a half died suddenly Saturday night after a short illness.

Truman Cox was 44. He is survived by, among others, a wife, Susan, and a daughter, Emmy. Funeral arrangements have yet to be determined.

Cox took over the master distiller job at the A. Smith Bowman Distillery in October 2011. He replaced longtime Bowman master distiller Joe Dangler.

Over the past few years the distillery has been in the process of opening itself up to the public for tours and events. The distillery and its parent company posted an announcement about Cox’s death on Facebook, saying he left a “notable and positive mark on our company in the time he was with us.”

The A. Smith Bowman Distillery will be closed for tours today.
