Local jobless rate at 5 percent

The Fredericksburg area’s jobless rate was 5 percent in December, according to Virginia Employment Commission data released Wednesday.

That was down from 5.6 percent in December 2011. The region continues to have one of the lowest jobless rates in Virginia, whose 5.4 percent rate in December was tied for 11th-best in the nation.

Stafford County had a 4.3 percent jobless rate in December, tied with Fauquier County for seventh-lowest in the state. Spotsylvania County tied for 12th with a 4.5 percent rate.

The city of Fredericksburg had the region’s highest jobless rate in December at 7.8 percent.
