Spotsylvania also in the mix for FBI HQ

Spotsylvania County has thrown its name in the hat to be considered for a relocated FBI headquarters.

County officials have expressed their interest to a variety of public and private sector stakeholders as well as officials from the General Services Administration, which handles real-estate transactions for federal agencies, according to Spotsylvania Economic Development Director Tom Rumora.

Rumora said in an email that the county would offer an “excellent value” to the federal government. He pointed out that many federal employees already live in the county, where he said costs of living are lower and quality of life is higher than closer to Washington.

He mentioned three potential sites for an FBI headquarters: two directly off the Massaponax exit on each side of Interstate 95 and one near the planned Virginia Railway Express station off U.S. 17.

Rumora also said that the former General Motors Powertrain plant on State Route 2 could be used for a variety of secure FBI functions.

The FBI headquarters are now at the deteriorating J. Edgar Hoover Building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, and the GSA is asking developers and localities to submit candidates for a new headquarters.

The agency is looking for about 2 million square feet of office space that can hold about 11,000 workers. The GSA has said that the ideal site would have up to 55 acres and be close to a Metro station and the Beltway.

Because of the large number of jobs and prestige involved, competition is fierce for the FBI headquarters, with Congressional delegations meeting regularly on the matter. Virginia is vying with Maryland, and within each state individual localities are making their pitch. Stafford County has put itself in the mix, as have Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties.

The GSA is now taking information from developers and expects to request proposals this summer.
