Virginia Congressional delegation meets on FBI HQ

U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman, who represents much of the Fredericksburg region, tweeted this picture of Thursday’s meeting. Used with permission.

The members of U.S. Congress who represent Virginia met Thursday on strategies to convince the FBI to relocate its headquarters to the state.

The FBI’s headquarters are now at the deteriorating J. Edgar Hoover Building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington. The General Services Administration, which handles real-estate transactions for federal agencies, has asked developers to submit specific proposals for a new headquarters campus.

Stafford and Prince William counties are making a joint push to convince the FBI to relocate to the Quantico area. The Virginia counties closer to Washington are also courting the FBI, as are various localities in the Maryland suburbs.

The FBI headquarters would likely include more than 2 million square feet of office space and as many as 12,000 jobs, and therefore competition is fierce.

Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine and Reps. Rob Wittman, Frank Wolf, Jim Moran and Gerry Connolly attended the meeting along with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and representatives from Alexandria and Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties.

The group released a statement saying they will “work to promote Virginia as the best place for this important relocation.” It noted that the FBI already has many divisions in Virginia, including the Quantico area.
