Grog and Tankard re-opening in Stafford

A family who for many years ran the Grog and Tankard live-music club in Washington’s Georgetown area will reopen the establishment as a restaurant, sports bar and late-night venue in Stafford County.

Abdul Hossainkhail and his children hope to open the new version of the Grog and Tankard at 1243 Jefferson Davis Highway by Jan. 15. Aldo’s Italian Restaurant was formerly in that building.

Hasib Hossainkhail, who is CEO of the new venture, said the Grog and Tankard will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week, focusing on appetizers, kabobs and burgers. It will also be a sports bar and feature live music several nights a week. He said several bands have already been booked. The space is now being renovated.

The Hossainkhail family ran the Washington club for nearly 25 years before selling it in 2008. A Washington Post article that ran about the closing indicated that the Grog and Tankard was a club where newer musical acts could get a start. Hootie and the Blowfish and Vertical Horizon played there.
