Local business community somewhat optimistic

Many members of the Fredericksburg-area business community are optimistic that the regional economy will improve in the next 12 months.

About 51 percent of the roughly 200 people who responded to a recent Fredericksburg Regional Alliance survey said they were “somewhat confident” that the local economy would improve in the next year.

The remainder were evenly split being “strongly confident,” “not too confident” and “not confident at all.”

About 77 percent of the respondents think the local economy is doing better than that of the U.S. as a whole, and nearly 80 percent are optimistic about its growth potential.

Survey-takers listed the cost of healthcare as the most important economic issue facing them, and a depressed housing market as the factor most adversely affecting the local economy.

Nearly two-thirds of the respondents believe that the region’s proximity to the Washington area is its greatest asset.

The FRA conducted the survey in person at its annual meeting earlier this month and online through Fredericksburg Business Insider. The regional marketing and economic development organization conducted a similar survey this past spring, with comparable results.
