Company expanding at Stafford Regional Airport

An Oregon-based aviation company plans to expand its operation at Stafford Regional Airport.

Vertol Systems Company Inc. recently submitted plans to Stafford planners to build about a 20,000-square-foot hangar at the airport. It will be next to the company’s slightly larger facility.

Vertol provides “specialized helicopter and aircraft solutions” to its customers, including the federal government, according to its website. As with its first facility, Vertol will lease the land from the Stafford Regional Airport Authority and own the hangar itself.

Airport manager Ed Wallis said he is talking to two additional prospects interested in corporate hangars, but those deals haven’t been finalized.

The airport authority is also considering building additional T-hangars that could store personal aircraft. The airport’s 40 individual units for private planes are all full, and 13 people are on the waiting list.

In addition, construction of a new, 10,000-square-foot terminal building is expected to ramp up in the next few weeks. A groundbreaking ceremony has already been held.
