Doris Buffett issues challenge grant to local Habitat

Doris Buffett

Local philanthropist Doris Buffett has pledged $25,000 to the Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity if the organization can raise $50,000 at its gala event Dec. 6.

The local Habitat would use the funds to build and rehabilitate homes for needy people in the community. Next year the organization plans a home that will be primarily built by women.

The theme of the Dec. 6 gala at the Fredericksburg Expo and Conference Center will be “women who build.” The local Habitat chapter will honor Buffett, Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce President Susan Spears and Handy Girl Home Improvements owner Mitzi Hamilton. Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw will be the keynote speaker.

Hamilton, whose company is based in King George County, will oversee the “Women Build” next year for Habitat.

The gala will run from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and include a seated dinner, an open bar and a band. Tickets, which can be purchased at the local Habitat’s website or store in the Four-Mile Fork area of Spotsylvania County, cost $125 for individuals and $200 for couples. A silent auction will also be held to raise money.
