A woman who 40 years ago started a travel agency in Spotsylvania County that is now one of the largest U.S. companies in that field was honored in New York City on Friday with a lifetime achievement award.

Gloria Bohan, founder and CEO of Omega World Travel, was among those honored Friday at the ninth-annual Stevie Awards for Women in Business.

Bohan started the company in 1972 in a building at the intersection of Bragg Road and State Route 3, where Omega World Travel continues to have an office. The company’s headquarters are now in Fairfax. Omega now has annual sales revenues of more than $1 billion and more than 1,000 employees.

The Stevie Awards recognize female executives, entrepreneurs and the organizations they run.
