Stafford airport terminal project set to begin
Construction of a new, permanent terminal building at the Stafford Regional Airport will start soon.
Everything is ready for the start of construction, said airport manager Ed Wallis. Curtis Contracting Inc., which is based in West Point, is the general contractor for the 10,000-square-foot facility.
A formal groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Construction is expected to last about 10 months.
The $3.4 million facility will include a passengers’ lounge, business center, conference room, flight planning and pilots’ area, administrative offices, vending machines and restrooms.
The Stafford Regional Airport Authority is financing the project through about $2 million in grants from the Virginia Department of Aviation and a $1.4 million loan from Stafford County to be repaid from revenues derived from new commercial tenants at the airport.
The permanent structure will replace the double-wide trailer that is currently serving as the airport’s terminal. Airport officials think the new facility will help attract businesses that may use it for work-related travel.
