Big Burger Pub to reopen as Durango Grill

The Big Burger Pub at 4256 Plank Road in Spotsylvania County will reopen Wednesday as Durango Grill.

Longtime local restaurateur Steve Estes has taken over management of the eatery from Bill and Christine Jones, who own the shopping center in which it’s located. The center is next to the former Ukrop’s grocery store.

Sunday was the last day of business for Big Burger Pub.

The January 2010 closing of Ukrop’s, which occupied a 63,000-square-foot building, has made it hard for the Joneses’ to attract tenants to their adjacent shopping center. Many of the businesses that were there have since closed. No new tenant has been found for the Ukrop’s space.

The Joneses opened Big Burger Pub themselves at the center and later recruited Estes to take over the company under the new restaurant name.

Estes has run Durango restaurants in the Fredericksburg area for many years. Fires have destroyed previous locations. For the past few years he ran Rodango’s Steak House in Central Park before closing this past spring.

Estes likes the ample parking that’s available at his new location, as well as its proximity to many subdivisions. Durango Grill will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and Estes might offer breakfast in the future. The menu will be similar to the ones at his previous restaurants, with steaks, seafood, ribs, sandwiches and more.
