George Mason researcher to lead Stafford research park

An executive in George Mason University’s Office of Research & Economic Development will lead the effort to develop the Quantico Corporate Center in North Stafford into a large research and technology park focusing on the defense and intelligence communities.

Dennis McBride, associate vice president for outreach and project development at GMU’s Office of Research & Economic Development, is the new part-time executive director of the Stafford Research and Technology Park.

Stafford is partnering with ManTech International Corp., the University of Mary Washington, George Mason University and Germanna Community College on the research park at the Silver Cos. development off U.S. 1 near the Quantico Marine Corps Base. Stafford’s academic partners will this fall offer six classes geared toward defense and other government contractors in a space the county is leasing at the QCC.

McBride will work two days a week on the tech park, including building relationships with important contacts in Washington and within the Department of Defense, said Tim Baroody, Stafford’s economic development director.

On Friday the Stafford Economic Development Authority voted to pay GMU $50,000 a year for this fiscal year and next for McBride’s time. The money came from the $237,000 that Stafford’s Board of Supervisors allocated to the tech park from its Opportunity Fund last fall.

Baroody called McBride’s arrival a “big step forward” for the tech park and said his services were coming at a “bargain” price for Stafford.
