Mexican restaurant and bar coming to former Fatty J’s space

Jorge's Cantina is coming to this space downtown.

A new Mexican restaurant and bar with a fun, casual atmosphere is coming to downtown Fredericksburg.

The Richmond-based restaurateurs who own and operate F.W. Sullivan’s on William Street will open Jorge’s Cantina at 106 George St., a space formerly occupied by Fatty J’s.

The atmosphere will have an outdoorsy feel that evokes a beach, said Jake Crocker, one of the owners. There will be a tequila bar and lots of televisions at Jorge’s, which will be open for dinner and late into the night seven days a week.

The restaurant was named Jorge’s, Spanish for “George,” because of the street it’s on as well as George Washington’s ties to the region.

Crocker and his partners started constructing the restaurant a couple of weeks ago and plan to have it open in June.

The restaurateurs have been leasing the space since the beginning of the year, soon after Fatty J’s closed, but have taken their time finalizing the concept. They decided there was demand for more Mexican food and late-night options downtown.

Crocker and his partners at FWS Group are teaming with Jose Garcia on the new venture. Garcia and his family own the Richmond-based Mexico Restaurant chain, which has a location in Spotsylvania County’s Cosner’s Corner shopping center.

Jorge’s Cantina will be in the roughly 5,000-square-foot upstairs space at 106 George. Crocker’s team plans to eventually use the larger downstairs space as a venue for live music, comedy and special events.

FWS Group is also about a month away from opening The Chimneys, a new restaurant focused on Southern-style fare at 623 Caroline St. across from the Courtyard by Marriott hotel.
