Local tax collections in December hit four-year high

Sales tax collections hit a four-year high in the Fredericksburg area in December, a sign of a strengthening local economy.

Local governments in the Fredericksburg area collected $4.05 million in sales taxes in December, according to Virginia Department of Taxation data released Wednesday. That was up 4.6 percent from December 2010 and was only the second month since 2006 in which the $4 million mark has been surpassed locally.

The data are for Fredericksburg and Caroline, King George, Stafford and Spotsylvania counties.

Collections in Fredericksburg were down 4.4 percent year-over-year, but each of the other five localities saw increases. King George County, powered by the new Walmart in the Dahlgren area, led the way with a 43.2 percent increase from December 2010. Caroline’s collections rose 34 percent, followed by Stafford (up 9.9 percent) and Spotsylvania (up 2.1 percent).
