Silver Cos. continues holiday tradition started by founder

The Silver Cos. this year continued a holiday tradition started by the late Carl D. Silver many years ago. The real estate development company’s founder, who died Nov. 15, was known for his generosity, and that was especially true during the holiday season. His company every year helped many area families who couldn’t afford Christmas presents. This year, as it has in the past, the company spent thousands of dollars to help about 100 children and 20 elders from local agencies, said Silver staffer Peggy Winters. Among the agencies that have been assisted are local social service departments, the American Red Cross, Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters and Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging. Silver employees get a list of children and elders to shop for, and the presents they desire, and then the company’s foundation funds the purchases. Winters said the “holiday project” was even more special this year, as Silver employees reflected on how much the program meant to the company’s founder.
