Exterior renovation planned at Fredericksburg Visitor Center

Plans are in the works to change the exterior look of the Fredericksburg Visitor Center at 706 Caroline St. downtown. The city’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism plans to seek funding for a facade improvement of the visitor center during next year’s budget process, said department head Karen Hedelt. The changes would be based on suggestions made by Staunton-based architecture firm Frazier Associates, which has submitted facade improvement plans for numerous downtown properties as part of a new grant program through the city’s Economic Development Authority. Frazier’s suggestions include painting the majority of the structure “seminole brown.” Hedelt said the city’s Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Department would contract and supervise the improvement work. She said it’s early in the process, and there are no cost estimates yet. The city may seek a grant from the EDA, which offers up to $10,000 in matching funds for facade improvement work. The proposed signage for the new look is on the Nov. 14 agenda of the Fredericksburg Architectural Review Board (along with separate requests for touch-up painting at the Inn at Fredericksburg Square on Caroline Street and a sign at the Suburban City Salon on Princess Anne Street).
