Thursday ceremony to mark Oberle school expansion

The Gladys H. Oberle School

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday to celebrate the expansion of the Gladys H. Oberle School, a special-education alternative day school in Fredericksburg run by Employment Resources Inc.

In December 2010, the school opened in 12,000 square feet at 404 Willis St., a formerly industrial property owned by local businessman Joe Wilson. The school moved there from its longtime home at 500 Lafayette Blvd. in the city. This year the school expanded into the building’s remaining 10,000 square feet.

The Oberle school received about a $104,000 grant from the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation for the expansion. Some of the students from Mary Washington Healthcare’s Snowden Academy, which closed earlier this year, now attend the Oberle school. MWHC executives Fred Rankin and Xavier Richardson are scheduled to speak at Thursday’s ceremony.
