About 7,500 people registered for Historic Half

MORE: Read more news from Fredericksburg

About 7,500 people registered for the May 15 Marine Corps Historic Half marathon, the most in the race’s four-year history in Fredericksburg. About 5,700 people actually ran the 13.1-mile race, as we reported here. Fredericksburg’s economic development and tourism department passed along the final race demographic information to me today. Click here for the full results. Among the things I thought were interesting about the data:

  • The gender breakdown was almost exactly evenly split.
  • Nearly a third of the registered runners had military ties, with the U.S. Marine Corps accounting for almost half of the military members.
  • About a third of the runners were from out of state, which explains why hotel rooms throughout the region were booked solid the Saturday night before.
  • The youngest registered runner was 10, and the oldest 83. As the below graph shows, the breakdown of the runners’ ages was almost a perfect bell curve, with 30-42 years of age being the “sweet spot.” I am right in the middle of that sweet spot, which leaves me with very few excuses for having not run.
