Washington, D.C., bests all states in job growth
Washington, D.C., has outperformed all 50 states in the number of jobs lost or added since the recession started in December 2007, according to a study published today by the Economic Policy Institute. Total jobs increased 3.2 percent in the District during that time, reflecting the growth of the federal government. Alaska and North Dakota were the only two states that had positive growth rates. Virginia has lost 3.4 percent of its jobs since December 2007. Maryland has lost 3.3 percent. Both states fared better than most, which is partly due to their proximity to Washington. The hardest-hit states were Nevada (14.2 percent job loss), Arizona and Michigan. There is a shortage of more than 11 million jobs in the U.S. today, according to the EPI study.
