Southwest Airlines coming to Reagan National and Richmond?

Southwest Airlines could be coming to Reagan National and Richmond International airports. Southwest announced today that it will buy AirTran Holdings Inc., the parent company of AirTran Airways. The deal is for about $1.4 billion in cash and Southwest stock. Click here for Southwest’s press release.  

Southwest already operates out of Dulles International Airport and BWI but not Richmond or National. AirTran operates out of both Richmond and National, so Southwest appears poised to enter those airports as well.

    This is potentially BIG news for Southwest fans. In another airline related blog today, the author gathered bits of information from several public sources regarding the acquisition, and it was reported that other than DFW, Southwest plans to continue operations in all current Air Tran locations. There is very little overlap in service, with only 19 non-stop routes in direct competition.

    In addition, Air Tran serves several international locations, including: Nassau, the Bahamas ; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic ; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; Cancun, Mexico, and Aruba.
