Region’s jobless rate up to 6.3 percent in December

The jobless rate in the Fredericksburg region—the city and Caroline, King George, Stafford and Spotsylvania counties—rose to 6.3 percent in December, according to Virginia Employment Commission data out today. The regional rate was 5.9 percent in November and 5 percent in December 2008. Last month followed four consecutive months of a local jobless rate under 6 percent. Every area locality had a higher rate than the month and year before. The region’s jobless rate for December had surpassed 6 percent only one other time since 1990. That was in 1991, when the rate was 6.8 percent. The region’s jobless rate was lower than the statewide 6.7 percent average for December, which itself is well below the 9.7 percent national rate. None of the rates are adjusted for seasonal factors.
