Ahold’s purchase does not include Spotsylvania Ukrop’s

Ahold’s purchase of Ukrop’s Super Market DOES NOT include the store on State Route 3 in Spotsylvania County. Ukrop’s operates 27 stores; Ahold is buying 25 of them and starting one new store in Wyndham. Ahold’s Giant-Carlisle Division, which operates Giant Foods, is making the purchase.

Giant Food spokeswoman Tracy Pawelski tells me that the two Ukrop’s stores that Giant is NOT buying are Joe’s Supermarket in Richmond and the Spotsylvania store. No word yet on what will happen to the Spotsylvania store. Pawelski says: "Ukrop’s will decide what to do with those stores going forward."

Here is part of the second press release from Ahold:

Carlisle, Pennsylvania – Ahold today announced that its Giant-Carlisle Division, headquartered in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, has entered into an agreement to acquire 25 stores from Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc., a family-owned business which operates supermarkets based in Richmond, Virginia.

As part of the agreement, Giant-Carlisle will hire store associates and is purchasing assets including inventory, equipment and existing lease agreements. Stores are located in the Greater Richmond area and Williamsburg, Virginia.

It will be very interesting to see how this pans out. Certainly not all, but I would guess a fair number of Ukrops’ associates ARE Ukrops associates because of the fact that they do not work on Sundays.

Giant does not have such a policy, and I doubt they will keep such a policy in place at these former Ukrops stores. I suspect there will be a significant turnover.
