Area jobless rate at 5.8 percent in September

The Fredericksburg-area unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in September, up slightly from the 5.7 percent rate in August but down from where it’s been most of the year, according to data out today from the Virginia Employment Commission. There were 9,793 area residents unemployed in September out of a total labor force of 168,735. The area is composed of Fredericksburg and Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties. Virginia’s jobless rate for September was 6.6 percent, and the U.S. rate was 9.5 percent.
