Report: Ukrop’s deal breaks down

A private equity group that was negotiating to buy Ukrop’s Super Markets has dropped out of the bidding, reports Supermarket News, which is a weekly trade magazine for the food distribution industry.

The SN report is based on an anonymous source who says the private equity group ran into some "contractual issues" and had difficulty getting financing. It also says that Ukrop’s is again talking to bidders who expressed interest earlier, including Harris Teeter. The report says the previous talks between Ukrop’s and Harris Teeter broke down because HT wasn’t interested in all of Ukrop’s store locations.

Ukrop’s will close its Roanoke store Oct. 24 but has said it’s committed to the Fredericksburg and Williamsburg stores as well as the core Richmond market.

Meanwhile Harris Teeter continues to do "due diligence" on its potential plans for a distribution facility in King George County. The North Carolina grocer has received five extensions from King George on its plans for a $101 million, 500,000-square-foot distribution center. It now has until Nov. 6.

Ukrop’s and Harris Teeter representatives have declined to comment on all of the above.
