Area’s unemployment rate edges up slightly
The jobless rate for the George Washington Regional Commission planning district rose slightly in May from the month before, according to data out today from the Virginia Employment Commission. The regional unemployment rate for May was 6.3 percent compared with 6 percent in April. It was the highest jobless rate for May since 1992, but below the seasonally unadjusted state rate (7 percent) and the national rate (9.1 percent).
The city of Fredericksburg’s jobless rate was 9.6 percent in May, higher than the month before but the second-straight month that it’s been in single digits.
The VEC now has a cool interactive map that shows you a map of the unemployment rate in each Virginia locality, as well as demographic information about unemployment claimants. Click here for the site.
