Checking with local GM dealers…
Kelly Hannon and I are checking around with all Fredericksburg-area General Motors dealerships today to see if they’ve heard anything from GM, which has said it’s notifying 1,100 U.S. dealers today that their franchise agreements will not be renewed after next year. Dealers expect to hear either by phone or FedEx letters.
This comes on the heels of yesterday’s announcement by Chrysler that it was ending its relationship with 789 U.S. dealerships. Britt Chrysler Jeep in Fredericksburg was on the list. Click here to read today’s article about this.
Both struggling automakers are reducing dealerships as part of an overall restructuring effort. Because GM is not in bankruptcy court like Chrysler, the company does not have to make public the list of dealers to be cut. So the decision as to whether to reveal the results to the public will be up to the individual dealers.
Here is a list of the area GM dealers that we are contacting today. At this point we haven’t heard that any are affected. Check back for updates.
