Should home ownership be so widespread?

I thought this Wall Street Journal article had a pretty interesting take on the American dream of home ownership. Written by an Aussie, it questions the viability of the American dream and wonders why for so long the U.S. mortgage market held up on terms so unfavorable to the lender. It’s well worth considering.
