Bottom Dollars will be turned into Food Lions

BY CATHY JETT

BYE-BYE, Bottom Dollar.

The stores, which focus on private labels and a limited selection of national brands, will be converted into Food Lions this spring.

Well, at least the three Fredericksburg-area Bottom Dollars and 19 others will be switching over. Parent company Food Lion is expanding the concept in new markets and smaller-format stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio.

“The Bottom Dollar Food stores in North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland were larger-format stores, and we have found the Bottom Dollar Food format to be most successful in its smaller-format stores,” said spokeswoman Christy Phillips–Brown.

These smaller-format stores have about 18,000 square feet of space, she said. The four Bottom Dollar stores in the Fredericksburg area were formerly Food Lions and are about twice that size.

Work began recently on the Bottom Dollar stores here, and they’re staying open while the conversion is under way. When it’s complete, they will have a vastly expanded selection, including more produce and meats, as well as a full-service deli/bakery department.

Food Lion also will be rolling out a new “scan and bag” system for cashiers, which will make the checkout process more efficient. Currently, Bottom Dollar customers have to bag their own purchases.

Food Lion is hiring 12 to 15 additional employees for each of the 22 Bottom Dollar stores that are undergoing conversion. Applications can be made at foodlion.com/careers.

Food Lion introduced the Bottom Dollar concept, which was aimed at bargain shoppers, along with its higher-end sister chain, Bloom, in 2006.

The grocery chain announced last year that it was scrapping Bloom and would convert all 12 Bloom and Bottom Dollar grocery stores in Fredericksburg and Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, as well as the Bloom in Locust Grove, into Food Lion-branded stores.

Currently, the only area Bottom Dollar stores are in Fredericksburg Shopping Center, Breezewood Shopping Center in Spotsylvania County and Ferry Farms Shopping Center in Stafford County.
