Downtown project goes before ARB
A plan to renovate a Caroline Street mixed-use building across from the downtown library will be before Fredericksburg’s Architectural Review Board Sept. 10.
City residents Frans and Karen Vossenberg plan to fully renovate a two-story property at 1216 Caroline St. on both the inside and outside, including rebuilding a two-story rear porch. The Vossenbergs have a son who lives on the second floor, and they want to improve the first floor for business use.
Frans Vossenberg, a cardiologist who founded Virginia Cardiovascular Consultants, said a few businesses have expressed interest in the commercial space, but nothing has been solidified. Having a tenant lined up would help them plan how to finish the first floor. Dot’s Beauty Shoppe was the last business in that building, but it’s been closed for many years.
The Vossenbergs will apply for a façade improvement grant through Fredericksburg’s Economic Development Authority this fall to help with the project. They also own a neighboring property at 202 Fauquier St. that they want to eventually turn into a bed-and-breakfast.
