Second ‘Family Table’ starts Aug. 4


Want to encourage your little ones to eat their veggies—and get a deal on a restaurant meal?

Then downtown Fredericksburg has an event for you.

The city’s second annual “Family Table” summer restaurant week, which starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, encourages people to buy locally grown food, promotes healthy eating habits and highlights the myriad of city dining options available for families with children.

To kick things off, the city will close the section of Prince Edward Street bordering Hurkamp Park to vehicular traffic until 2 p.m. to create more space for the farmers market. Major draws will include a mix of regular and new vendors, plus interactive displays from the Explore It! Children’s Museum, the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center.

James Parker, whose elaborate carvings of fruits and vegetables have been featured on several Food Network shows, will be giving demonstrations as well. He is the founder of Veggie Art in Chantilly.

Several area organizations also will have displays at the market. These will include the Rappahannock Regional Solid Waste Management Board, which will have information about recycling; and the Friends of the Rappahannock, which is encouraging people to protect crabs’ environment by not using lawn fertilizer.

Members of the Master Gardener Association of the Central Rappahannock Area will talk about canning, and the Rappahannock Group of the Sierra Club will be giving away reusable shopping bags.

Last year about 1,000 people attended the kickoff event, and an equal number are expected this year.

The 12 restaurants participating in “Family Table,” which runs through Aug. 12, will feature special kids’ meals nightly from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and a “two for twenty” adult menu where diners can select two courses for only $20.

The restaurants are: 909 Salon, The Bavarian Chef Fredericksburg, Bistro Bethem, Capital Ale House, Eileen’s Bakery & Café, FOODE, The Gazebo at Fredericksburg Square, Happy Clam, Home Team Grill, J. Brian’s Tap Room, Jake and Mike’s and the Kenmore Inn.
