Chat focus will be long-term insurance

BY CATHY JETT

Don’t want to be a financial burden on your children when you’re old?

Overwhelmed by how much it costs for nursing-home care?

Long-term health care insurance may be an option to consider.

Olivia B. Claud and Loren White from the State Corporation Commission’s Bureau of Insurance will answer readers’ questions about this insurance product, which covers care generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid, during our next Money Talk$ webchat.

It will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday on fredericks burg.com.

Both Claud and White work in the bureau’s life and health division. Claud is the insurance outreach coordinator and White is its senior insurance market examiner.

Claud joined the State Corporation Commission’s Bureau of Insurance as a market conduct examiner in 1989 and worked her way up the ranks to become insurance outreach coordinator in 2000.

She has been instrumental in implementing Virginia’s first insurance counseling program for senior citizens, the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program, or VICAP. She currently serves on the VICAP Advisory Council, the Virginia State TRIAD Council and the Provider Outreach and Education Advisory Group.

Claud is a Health Insurance Associate (HIA), Managed Healthcare Professional (MHP) and Healthcare Customer Service Associate (HCSA). She has a bachelor’s degree from Meredith College.

White is a senior insurance market examiner, and works with the general public, insurance industry, other insurance departments, legislative and other officials to provide information and guidance relevant to insurance statutes and regulations involving complaints and inquires.

Her insurance career began 22 years ago when she served as a consumer advocate and eventually became an account manager for a large health insurer. She also has the industry designations of HIA and MHP, as well as Long-Term Care Professional from America’s Health Plans.

To participate in “Money Talk$,” either submit questions in advance by emailing them to howen@freelance star.com or log on to freder icksburg.com during the chat.

The chat will be archived on fredericksburg.com, and a transcript will appear in The Free Lance–Star’s Business section on Thursday. Feel free to send us ideas for other topics.
