Inauguration 2009: The View from the Photo Desk

We are past the 12-hour mark (some of us are past the 13-hour mark) in our Inauguration coverage. Most of the photogs are on the trains back. Photos are starting to come in from our photographers as they enter areas with better cell coverage.

Strange requests from the photographers are also coming in. Pete sent this text: "Were good getting bacj mike wants pizza and bees"

I can get the pizza, but I don’t know where in the world I’m gonna get some bees at this hour.

Inauguration 2009: The View from the Photo Desk

Ok, so I’ve been at the office for a little over 4 hours now editing photos so that we can keep the "live" coverage going on Fredericksburg.com.

Here’s a breakdown of the morning so far:

3:45 a.m.:  I get out of bed to help staff photographer Peter Cihelka figure out how to open the baby gate at the top of the stairway in my Spotsy home. Pete who lives in Woodbridge stayed the night in order to pair up with reporter Emily Battle first thing this morning.

3:47 a.m.: Pete leaves my house to catch his 5:15 a.m. train out of Fredericksburg. I return to bed.

4:00 a.m.: My alarm goes off and I re-get out of bed.

4:41 a.m.: Showered, hair combed, teeth brushed and "Joe Dirt" beard shaved, I’m out the door and headed to the office.

5:05 a.m.: I’m in the office and open for business

5:06 a.m.: Staff photographer Mike Morones reports that he’s in line waiting on the 5:15 VRE.

5:37 a.m.: Mike and Multimedia Editor (Photo) Becky Sell transmit their first images from the VRE.

5:40 a.m.: First technical glitches of the day. I can’t get Mike’s photos to open in Photoshop and one of Becky’s files is completely corrupted.

5:45 a.m.: Back in business! I figure out that if I import Mike’s photos into iPhoto and then export back to the desktop that I can get the files to open in Photoshop.

6:30 a.m.: I make a quick breakfast run to Burger King.

7:10 a.m.: I begin to realize that a Burger King breakfast may have been a mistake.

7:46 a.m.: Mike sends the following email message: "Nothing is working" (which means that our on-site crew cannot transmit images back to the paper)

7:46 and 30 seconds a.m.: I begin to curse.

8:37 a.m.: From DC, Becky sends the following text message: "I stood in the wrong line and am not sure where I am"

8:37 a.m.: Turns out the Burger King breakfast was definitely a mistake.

9:17 a.m.: Mike sends the following text message: "Dude nothing is working"

9:17 and 1/2 second a.m.:  I begin to curse again.

Check back throughout the day for more updates.
