Election Day, November 4, 2008
At the Dorothy Hart Community Center in Fredericksburg I noticed white cardboard boxes with the word “VOTE” and an American flag printed on the side.
I’ve visited the relatively quiet city voting site for many years, so quiet that poll workers are usually reading books or knitting. My first thought was that these empty boxes were for decoration, or possibly as use as “traffic cones.”
Not.
They’re to handle the “large” amount of traffic at the site. And, during the quiet hour of 11 a.m., they were actually in use!

The city of Fredericksburg had cardboard voting booths erected to handle the large voter count at its site a the Dorothy Hart Community Center. (November 4, 2008) (Robert A. Martin/The Free Lance-Star)
Outside, under the McCain/Palin Easy-Up shelter was Skebo Kiley – a German Shepherd – sporting a campaign button. No lipstick.
